BD: $31.99

In the shadow of war, danger could be hiding anywhere—and anyone could be part of the conspiracy. Two tense tales of high-stakes suspense, Suddenly (1954) and Wiretapper (1955) capture the paranoia that simmered beneath the surface of postwar America.

Frank Sinatra gives one of the most unsettling performances of his career in Suddenly, starring as a cold-blooded assassin who takes a family hostage while preparing to kill the President of the United States. Opposite him, Sterling Hayden brings quiet resolve to director Lewis Allen's tightly wound thriller, which unfolds almost entirely within a single house as the tension mounts. In Wiretapper, Jim Vaus Jr. (Bill Williams) is an ex-army electronics expert just out of jail, a fact that he fails to share with his new wife. When he's recruited by a crime boss and his skills are put to work, conflict arises in the Vaus household. Blending elements of noir, evangelism, and biography, this film is based off of a memoir by Jim Vaus Jr. and shows another take on the mental state of post-war veterans.

Director: Lewis Allen

Frank Sinatra is unforgettable as a psychotic war veteran whose goal is to assassinate the president! As John Baron, Sinatra and his henchmen take over a house near the train station, holding the family hostage while waiting for the president’s train to arrive. Baron is good with a gun and has the perfect vantage point. All he has to do is keep a cool head. But can he? This cold-blooded thriller from director Lewis Allen (The Uninvited) feels as savage as it did decades ago when the New York Times called Sinatra’s performance, “a melodramatic tour de force.”
