All Baby Boomer Monster Kids hold the science fiction classics of the 1950s in high regard. Major studios put some top resources behind these movies and they delivered world-class thrills, whether on a Forbidden Planet or on This Island Earth, whether 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea or on a Journey to the Center of the Earth.
A step-down were these same company's second-string sci-fis and the still-smaller movies churned out by some of the era's more enterprising indie producers. At the bottom of the barrel were the flicks resulting from what AIP's James H. Nicholson called "backyard moviemaking": shot on ultra-low-budgets, sometimes partly in the moviemakers' own homes. Logic dictates that these shoe-stringers would be the least admired of the bunch. But in many cases, maybe the majority of cases, Monster Kids don't feel that way at all. Because the bargain basement titles are just so much fun.
"One-lung producers" (Sam Arkoff's term for them) threw their thrift-store hats in the monster-movie ring only after dreaming up sci-fi scenarios that could be made for pin money, and then finding yet more corners to cut during production. This Film Masters Blu-ray set celebrates four such all-expenses-spared science fiction sagas and the clever shortcuts taken by their cash-strapped creators.
For the first time, all four films in HD are being brought together in one set! Complete with new liner notes, archival special features, and film commentaries, this is your chance to procure out of print releases at a great deal!

Frankenstein's Daughter
“LOOK AT HER! SHE LIVES!"
Director: Richard E. Cunha
Starring: Sandra Knight, John Ashley, Donald Murphy
1958 | HD | 85 minutes
“Look at her! She lives!" So says Dr. Oliver Frank at the sight of his new creation, a hulking beast with the transplanted brain of a beautiful young woman. He has finally carried on the legacy of his late grandfather, the notorious Dr. Frankenstein! The twist in Frankenstein's Daughter (1958) is that it takes place in "modern" Los Angeles, where teenagers are forever in swim gear. Even as news reports warn them about a female monster menacing the neighborhood, nothing stops these kids from partying by the poolside. Fans of low-budget horror will see some familiar faces in the cast, including John Ashley, Harold Lloyd Jr., and former Playboy Playmate of the Month, Sally Todd (just a year after her appearance in The Unearthly). For Director Richard E. Cunha, Frankenstein's Daughter was part of a productive year where he turned out three other cult favorites: She Demons, Giant from the Unknown, and Missile to the Moon. And though Donald Murphy lacked the schlock pedigree of his director and co-stars, his thousand-watt stare makes him a perfectly evil Dr. Frank.

Giant from the Unknown
"IT CAME FROM ANOTHER WORLD"
Director: Richard E. Cunha
Starring: Sally Fraser, Buddy Baer, Morris Ankrum
1958 | HD | 77 minutes

Dr. Frederick Cleveland and his daughter Janet are joined by scientific researcher Wayne Brooks in the pursuit of ancient artifacts from Vargas, a giant 500-year-old Spanish conquistador. When a lightning storm interrupts their search, the team finds much more than artifacts when the long-lost Vargas returns to life, with a murderous rage and an axe to grind! With a shock a minute, Giant from the Unknown (1958) features make-up design from horror mainstay Jack Pierce, known for his work on Frankenstein (1931) and The Mummy (1932).

Brain from Planet Arous
"SCIENCE-FICTION'S MOST ASTOUNDING STORY!"
Director: Nathan Juran
Starring: John Agar, Joyce Meadows, Robert Fuller
1957 | HD | 84 minutes
Get ready for planet Earth to be overtaken by a criminal brain from outer space! When Gor, an evil brain from planet Arous, inhabits the body of scientist Steve March, his intention is nothing less than world domination. Lucky for Earth, another intergalactic brain, Vol, offers to assist March’s fiance, Sally, in stopping the madness. How does Val intend to help? By inhabiting Sally’s dog! A great example of cut-rate sci-fi from the 1950s, this independently produced feature stars B movie favorite John Agar (Revenge of the Creature (1955), The Mole People (1956)), and was directed by Nathan Juran, a master of the genre who helmed such classics as The Deadly Mantis (1957), Attack of the 50 Foot Woman (1958), and The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (1958).

Monster from Green Hell
"THE MAMMOTH MONSTER THAT TERRORIZED THE EARTH"
Director: Kenneth G. Crane
Starring: Jim Davis, Robert Griffin, Barbara Turner
1957 | HD | 71 minutes

From the era of giant bugs and atomic testing comes this low budget howler about mutant wasps. When scientists try to understand the effects of radiation on earth creatures, the result brings them to an area of Africa known as “Green Hell,” where wasps have mutated into monsters! Jim Davis, who would someday star in the TV series Dallas, plays Dr. Quent Brady, the scientist who starts the whole mess. The film also stars Vladimir Sokoloff (The Life of Emile Zola (1937), Mission to Moscow (1943)) as the skeptical Dr. Lorentz, and Joel Fluellen (Raisin in the Sun (1961)), as Arobi, who warns Brady to beware of the African location. The locals don’t call it “Green Hell” for nothing! Co-written by Louis Vittes, who gave us the classic I Married a Monster From Outer Space (1958).
